 Cheltenham Animal Shelter is pleased to report a successful week with regards to rehoming. Two of our long stay dogs went off to their new homes and we have had many more reserved. However, we do have 46 dogs, 29 cats and 16 rabbits still looking for new homes!
You may be surprised by the number of unwanted rabbits we currently look after. A few weeks ago, I wrote in the Gloucestershire Echo about the sad truth that rabbits are the third most popular pet in the U.K, but are deemed to be the most neglected. Not many people are aware that we rescue and rehome small animals so I would encourage you to consider offering a second chance to one of our rabbits rather than buying from a pet shop. But as always, please do your research first! I am sad to report that Cheltenham Animal Shelter was recently witness to the aftermath of a disgraceful act of neglect. Local Dog Wardens were called to pick up an abandoned dog. When they arrived at the reported location they found a greyhound tied to a tree with severe injuries to its right hind leg. It was clear that the dog had been hit by a car, tied up and left to suffer. The Wardens brought the greyhound into the Shelter where it was discovered that it was suffering from a dislocated hip. The dog has now been named Cullen by Shelter staff. He is still recovering from his injury but vets are still not sure if they will be able to save his leg. He is currently being fostered and so we have our fingers crossed that he will recover from his traumatic ordeal but it will be a long battle for him. In an effort to reduce animal cruelty and neglect, Cheltenham Animal Shelter endeavours to educate the pet owners of the future. Children in the local area are invited along to spend the day at the Animal Shelter learning about responsible pet ownership and animal care. The special Animal Days are run throughout the school holidays from 9am – 2pm. The day costs £25.00 per child. Please be aware that booking is essential.  Cheltenham Animal Shelter is appreciative of Battersea Dogs Home and Panorama for highlighting the sad truth about the many thousands of unwanted dogs in the U.K.
The hard hitting programme that aired on Monday 2nd August showed the shocking amount of dogs that have to be killed each and every year simply because there are not enough homes for them. Battersea Dogs Home released their euthanasia figures that have shocked animal lovers across the country. They reported that a third of the dogs that come into their care are destroyed.
As a smaller charity, Cheltenham Animal Shelter takes in dogs from four local councils and the police. We have a non-destruction policy and will only euthanise an animal if it too sick or too dangerous to re-home. Last year our 'put to sleep' figures were less than 2%.  Paws in the Park was a huge success this year. Cheltenham Animal Shelter made over £750 through the BBQ, bucket collections and the increasingly popular have a go dog agility. The queues for the BBQ and Dog Agility seemed never ending so the staff and volunteers were kept extremely busy throughout the day! There was lots of interest in the dogs from the Shelter that were paraded around in hope of getting them a new home. The Council Rangers will be donating their profits to the Animal Shelter and with over two thousand visitors estimated to have attended the day last year's amount is most likely to be doubled! Cheltenham Animal Shelter would like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers that spent their time helping out at the event. We would also like to thank the Council Rangers, Animal Magic and Vets on the Park for their massive contribution to organising the event. |
